An original lithographic theatre poster commissioned for a 1919 London revival of “The Sorcerer”, the third Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera which originally opened in 1877.
Printed by David Allen & Sons Ltd, 17 Leicester Street, London, a company well known for its theatrical and World War One enlistment posters.
W S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, an extraordinarily successful theatrical partnership, are still revered today for comic operas such as HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado.
The artist, Henry Matthew Brock (1875 – 1960) studied at the Cambridge School of Art and worked in advertising and book illustration, contributed to Punch magazine and produced a great deal of work for the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, established by Gilbert and Sullivan’s producer Richard D’Oyly Carte.
Some slight staining to the top left corner but overall, in good used condition for age. Strikingly mounted and framed in black.
