A large French Majolica pig jug, unstamped but of a well-known design, attributed to the Sarreguemines Pottery, established in Lorraine around 1784.
Made from earthenware and decorated with a glossy glaze typical of French figural pitchers of the late 19th to early 20th Centuries. The pig’s snout functions as the pouring spout and an opening for filling is located at the back of his head. The fine stream of water produced would be ideal to drip onto a sugar cube over a glass of absinthe, beloved by artists of Belle Époque Paris.
Warm golden yellow with blushing cheeks. Fine age-related crazing in the glaze, imparting an attractive patina.
Circa 1890s.
