An unusual, possibly American, Arts and Crafts style pine step stool. Hand painted and stained in penwork, a decoration first made fashionable in the early 19th Century, whereby black lacquer would be painted onto light timber before being scratched off with a fine pen. Here in a lovely design depicting leaves and berries.
Some wear to the top, imparting an attractive patina.
