American Platform Rocking Chair
Seating
SOLD
A handsome and very comfortable American Aesthetic Movement platform rocking chair with lovely detailing to the solid oak frame. Recently reupholstered in Zoffany Tudor Damask archive fabric in Indigo with bronze stud detailing.
The platform rocker has a seat that rocks whilst the base remains stationary. George Hunzinger, an immigrant German furniture maker, first patented a torsion bar system in 1882 that solved a problem with regular rocking chairs creeping across the floor as they were rocked. This major innovation in furniture technology is said to have revolutionised American parlours and rapidly spread abroad. As other manufacturers entered the market, they created designs utilising springs – as in this piece – to avoid infringing Hunzinger’s patent.
Circa 1890s.
