A striking Aesthetic Movement ebonised breakfront side cabinet or credenza.

The upper section has a spindled frieze with twin ball and cup finials above a central bevel edged mirror. Flanked by smaller twin bevelled mirrors above retangular plinths raised on pairs of ring-turned columns, with recessed panels behind, decorated with applied paper panels in a floral design. The lower section holds a central drawer with fielded panels, within a foliate decorated frieze. Large cupboard below, flanked by two sets of canted corner shelves to either side, with one long open galleried “pot board” shelf to its base.

The twin central doors have fielded panels edged with burr amboyna wood, the faces beautifully hand painted with daffodil flowers on a gilt background. The whole piece is decorated with gilt painted stringing and rosettes contrasting against the ebonised finish; ornate brass handles and hinges, and stands on turned urn-shaped feet.

A handsome, functional piece of “Art Furniture” from a once rather overlooked period of design that is now coming back into vogue with discerning interior designers. Unrestored but very attractive and characterful country house condition, showing scratches, wear and some minor losses to mouldings commensurate with age and use.

English, 1880s.
