Four ebonised side chairs with parcel gilt accents, designed by Bruce James Talbert (1838 -1881) for Gillow & Co of Lancaster and London.
The colourful upholstery, of a later date, suits the chairs very well.
Circa late 1870s.
Bruce Talbert was an architect and commercial designer and one of the leading proponents of the Reformed Gothic style that emerged in the 1860s and 1870s. He worked for Gillows on a freelance basis from about 1868 to 1871. A near identical design (number 78) intended for a drawing room, appears on page 42 of “Fashionable Furniture: a collection of three hundred and fifty original designs representing cabinet work, upholstery and decoration by various designers, including one hundred sketches by the late Bruce J Talbert, Architect, and a series of domestic interiors by Henry Shaw, Architect”, published by The Cabinet Maker and Art Furnisher, London, 1881.
