Jugendstil German Oak Hotel Post Box

SOLD

An unusual oak country house or hotel post box in the Jugendstil style.

Meaning “youth style”, Jugendstil was the German and Austrian manifestation of the Art Nouveau movement, the name derived from the Munich based art journal “Jugend”. Like its French and Belgian counterpart, the Central European style incorporates flowing, natural forms, but combined with more angular, geometric elements, as seen in this piece.

Well constructed in solid oak, with a broad moulded frieze over a single lockable door with thick bevelled glass panes to its delicate brass framed window. Beautifully curved decorative hammered brass strap hinges and lock escutcheon with original key. The original mail slot to the left hand side has been closed up at some point in its lifetime with a well matched oak fillet. Fitted with two metal hanging brackets to the rear and a single interior shelf, making this a distinctive and versatile small cupboard with a wonderfully deep and rich patina.

German, circa 1900.
