Tables & Desks

£595.00

A compact Ottoman side table of characteristic octagonal form. The top is finished in ebony, chequered stringing and inlaid mother of pearl (nacre) banding; the central design beautifully inset with mother of pearl and tughra emblem enclosed in an eight point star. This was a calligraphic insignia or seal of the reigning Sultan. The geometric base is decorated with ebony and square mother of pearl mosaic panels over Moorish arched heads extending to form the eight legs.

Fine condition, with a lovely patina.

Most likely imported during the 1880s/ 1890s by Liberty & Co, of a similar type to that featured on page 53 of their Eastern Art catalogue (1880/81), and page 69 of their Handbook of Sketches (1889).
