Moorish Window Seat Attributed to Liberty & Co

A stunning Moorish window seat or piano stool of the type retailed by Liberty & Co in the late 19th Century, having two raised curved ends, a deep frieze and four legs, all profusely and intricately carved with bead work (known as mashrabiya), inlaid with mother of pearl on all sides and the original carpet upholstered seat. A very well executed piece with some minor losses commensurate with age, but generally in super country house condition.

This striking statement piece also has an interesting history, having been acquired in the early 20th Century by an English family for their home in Biarritz on the Bay of Biscay, South Western France. At the time of the Second World War, they relocated to a fine house overlooking Wimbledon Common, South West London, where the stool remained for another eighty years.

A smaller version, the “Cairo”, of similar design but without the raised curved ends, is featured on page 28 of Liberty’s Art Furniture catalogue (1884).
