A 19th Century armorial plaque in the form of a heraldic shield depicting a turreted castle gatehouse.
Cast stone, possibly Coade stone. Originally known as Lithodipyra (Ancient Greek “stone fired twice”), this virtually weatherproof stoneware was created around 1770 by Eleanor Coade in Lambeth, London and continued to used for the manufacture of fine quality statues, architectural decorations and garden ornaments until the early 1830s.
