American Oak and Wicker Pedestal Table by Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company

Tables & Desks

SOLD

An American wicker (or rattan) pedestal table by Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company. The side aprons and four legs, united by a decorated X-shaped stretcher, are of woven, wicker construction with ornamental twists and stick and ball scrollwork. Square top in beautifully figured oak, bearing a partial paper label for Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company, Gardner, Massachusetts, on the underside.

Heywood Brothers was established in 1826 and the Wakefield Company in 1855. Both firms produced wicker and rattan furniture, which became increasingly popular towards the end of the 19th Century, and they became direct competitors. In 1897 the two companies merged as Heywood Brothers & Wakefield Company and the latter initiated mechanised production. Their wicker designs initially drew upon the American Aesthetic Movement and Japanese influences, which helps to place this piece stylistically within this earlier period. Designs became simpler as the Arts and Crafts Movement took hold. Examples of the company’s output are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Presented in lovely condition overall, with only a couple of minor losses of finials, which are barely noticeable. Many examples were later painted white, so it is comparatively rare to find a piece displaying all of its original natural wicker and oak finish.

Circa 1900.
