Lorren Kenny

Wildlife Realism Artist

I am a wildlife realism artist, specialising in pan pastel drawings and acrylic paintings. All of my artworks are lovingly created, capturing the very essence, soul and spirit of my subjects. As much as I strive for perfection, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing an animal come to life.

Drawing and painting is an expression of who I am and for me must be a free, enjoyable, intuitive process. My art is about connection and what I sense and feel towards my subject. It is not just about the time investment or detail; it is about losing oneself in the process and then drawing the viewer in, which leaves a lasting and endearing impression. Everything works coherently from the canvas to the framing which is bespoke and designed not only for the aesthetic which is an intrinsic part of the artwork, but also a sensory/mind body experience so that one may become fully immersed in it.

I have been drawing, painting and creating art for over 30 years and now working from my home studio in Leicestershire. Since discovering pastels, I have never looked back. I also love working in acrylics and recently took this up again, having renewed my passion and continue to discover new and interesting techniques.

I enjoy drawing/painting anything from cats, dogs, birds, lions, tigers and other wildlife. Art has been my passion from an early age, having grown up in South Africa where nature and animals are an integral and important part of everyday life.

I also specialise in pet commissions, which brings so much joy and memories to be cherished forever.

A little bit about how I work:

Each original is one of a kind and takes many hours of layering, detail work and care, including the sourcing of images which is essential and guarantees the success of my drawings/paintings. The subject must resonate with me so that I may materialise its essence, story and character.

I begin the drawing/painting process by creating an outline to ensure proportions are correct and that everything is in place. I then start in a particular area depending on what feels comfortable at the time. I might begin with the ear, eye or top of the head and work my way down. There is no set formula for how I work, and usually go with the flow. I then build up the under-layers and thereafter add many variations of detail, contour and shadow. Sometimes I change things up a bit depending on my state of mind. It is important to me as an artist to have an original style and not emulate others.

I can’t wait to get stuck into a drawing or painting as it is so exciting to see it unfold and take shape, however this takes skill, patience and persistence. I do put my heart and soul into everything I do which creatively keeps me focussed and in the zone. This is important to me so that I can be consistent and deliver the highest quality.
