Diana Sainsbury
Duns Tew Pottery
Serendipitously, when visiting Kelmscott Manor, we first met Diana and discovered her work in the Village Hall that was originally endowed by May Morris.
Says Diana: “I have been fascinated by pottery ever since I was a small child and my Mum took me to watch the local potter throwing pots on the wheel. Magic! However, I didn’t get the chance to try it myself until much later in life. I became hooked!
I am based in Duns Tew, a picturesque village in the heart of Oxfordshire. I work in stoneware and my aim is to produce pieces that are both useful and beautiful.”
All of Diana’s pots are hand-thrown on an antique Leach-type wooden kick-wheel; then dried, bisque-fired to 1000 degrees Celsius, glazed, and finally fired to around 1220 degrees Celsius. The high firing temperature makes the ware very tough and durable.
