David Turner
Blacksmith and Artist Metalworker
My artwork takes the patterns, symmetry and chaos of natural organic forms as its inspiration and uses metal as its medium. I employ traditional blacksmithing techniques thousands of years old in a contemporary way with wrought iron, mild and stainless steel and bronze. Each piece is heated to almost melting; battered, hammered, twisted, bent and wrought until it settles into its final resting place, whether that is in the form of a four metre tall garden sculpture or a six inch wall hanging.
I trained at Hereford College and then went on to work with various smiths around the UK and Portugal on projects as diverse as the restoration of Windsor Castle to a giant titanium wind sculpture. I am based in the beautiful countryside around Ashbourne in Derbyshire and have created work for customers as far afield as Scotland, Cornwall, The Algarve, Corfu… and even London!
